VPS or Cloud Computing: Which one is right for me?

If you are not a seasoned host user, how do you know which one is right for you?

1. VPS

VPS stands for Virtual Private Server. A VPS is in fact a dedicated server divided in several parts, each acting as an individual server. It is one single machine running several applications simultaneously with individual spaces for each user.

A VPS is a cost effective solution that gives you specific configurations, such as memory and processor, thus limiting flexibility.

Because a VPS lives within a single machine, there might be risks of hardware failure that could give you some downtime.

2. Cloud Computing.

When you host a site in Clould Computing, you are not actually using a physical machine. You are in fact using a space in the cloud. A cloud structure means several physical machines sharing resources. The advantage is that if one machine gets overloaded or shows hardware issues, other machines take that load from it and continue running the applications seamlessly. Cloud computing reduces the risk of downtime or overload considerably

Cloud computing also gives you more flexibility. Because the processing power is shared among several machines, capacity becomes limitless, whereas in a VPS scenario you are limited by that individual machine's capacity.

So, which one?

The answer depends on your needs. VPS is in fact cheaper. If you only run a small site that won't grow much in the near future and you don't have variation in accesses per day, VPS is you product. On the other hand, if your operation needs more resources and if you volume changes over time, than Cloud is the correct product for you.
